Toyota seems to be very aware of just how anticipated and popular the 2024 Tacoma is going to be. It’s trickled out information about the truck for months now. Probably the most anticipated information – just how much this thing is going to cost – is finally here. The 2024 Tacoma starts at $32,995, including a $1,495 destination charge, making it $2,900 more to start than the outgoing generation.
While some may scoff at that price increase, consider that this is a truly new truck – from the frame up, nothing has been left untouched. The third-generation Tacoma debuted for the 2016 model year and was described as “all-new,” but in reality it still had a lot of parts from the second-gen Tacoma, a truck that came out a full decade before. The 2024 Tacoma’s new boxed ladder frame and new engines alone are worth the higher price.
Base Tacoma SR trims start at $32,995 for the two-door XtraCab configuration. The SR is the fleet favorite so that means standard features like 17-inch steel wheels, rear-wheel drive, and the fresh 2.4-liter turbocharged inline-4 with 228 horsepower, which replaces the tired old 2.7-liter inline-4 and 3.5-liter V6 engines. You can pair that new engine with a six-speed manual or an optional eight-speed auto. Those wanting the added space of the four-door double cab will have to part with an additional $2,200; four-wheel drive is another $3,200.
The SR5 volume trim starts at $37,695 for the XtraCab and $38,695 for the double cab. You get more power with the SR5, but it depends on which transmission you go with. Purists that stick with the manual will get 270 HP while the eight-speed auto gets you 8 more ponies. The SR5 also adds standard features like LED fog lights and a smart key entry system, plus coil-spring rear suspension for the double cab.
Set just above the SR5 trim is the return of a Tacoma favorite, the Tacoma PreRunner. If you’re not familiar, the PreRunner gets you four-wheel-drive looks in a rear-wheel-drive package. Only available in the XtraCab configuration with the six-foot bed, the PreRunner starts at $39,595. That gets you a small suspension lift, 17-inch wheels with all-terrain tires, a locking rear diff and a 6,500-pound towing capacity.
Once you start heading towards the $40,000 mark, you can get into the TRD trims. The lineup starts with the street-focused TRD Sport. The XtraCab with the five-foot bed starts at $40,895 with rear-wheel drive; add on $500 if you want the six-foot bed. Going for the manual with four-wheel drive costs $43,295, while the TRD Sport with the auto and 4WD starts at $44,095. The TRD Sport comes with features like black 18-inch TRD wheels, black badging, aluminum pedals, and a hood scoop.
If you want to go off-road, there’s the TRD Off-Road. Only available in the double cab configuration with the five- or six-foot bed, the TRD Off-Road starts at $43,295 with 4WD and the six-speed manual; tack on another $1,100 if you want the automatic transmission. While this trim comes with off-road goodies like a multi-terrain select system, underbody skid plates, 33-inch BFGoodrich Trail-Terrain tires and Bilstein remote reservoir monotube shocks, the big news is under the hood.
The TRD Off-Road sees the availability of the most powerful engine in the Tacoma lineup. The new i-Force Max hybrid engine pairs a 1.87-kWh battery pack with a 48-hp electric motor that’s been integrated into the eight-speed transmission. The result is 326 HP and a massive 465 lb-ft of torque. Unfortunately Toyota hasn’t released pricing on how much extra the i-Force Max engine will be. It’ll be standard on the TRD Pro and TrailHunter trims and optional on the TRD Sport, TRD Off-Road and Limited.
If you want a bit of luxury with your Taco, the top-of-the-line Tacoma Limited starts at $53,595. Only available in the double cab configuration with the six-foot bed, you get all the luxury appointments like chrome accents, adaptive dampers, power-retractable side steps, a 14-inch touchscreen, a head-up display and a JBL audio system. The Limited also gets the i-Force Max hybrid engine as standard.
While the Tacoma Limited is currently the priciest Tacoma in the lineup, just wait. Toyota isn’t talking pricing on the TRD Pro or ultimate off-road TrailHunter trim just yet, but expect those to come close to if not easily eclipse the $60,000 mark. Until then, the 2024 Toyota Tacoma is expected to hit dealers nationwide next month.
